Description: | BACKGROUND Battleship Pretension is a long-running film podcast, headquartered in Los Angeles, USA. In 2020, they aggregated a listener-generated list of ‘The 101 Best Movies of the 2010s’, wrote about each one, and compiled these essays into a book. ABOUT THE DESIGN The 2010s may well have been the last year of the ‘classic’ movie-going experience, where one buys a ticket and goes to the theatre. The advent of streaming and the devastating impact of the pandemic on theatre chains indicates that that tradition may be on the decline. This book cover celebrates this waning tradition, by masquerading as a movie ticket. It is modelled after the tickets of popular American theatre chains. The client/publisher’s name appears in the manner the theatre’s name would appear. Further, all the relevant information about the book (such as the price and the ISBN) have been incorporated into the design. A second-hand thermal printer used for ticketing was used to print the typography, to achieve the desired texture. This was then scanned and digitally composited to create the cover. The back of the book was a recreation of the back of an American movie ticket, complete with the usual black strip, the condensed sans serif and forced-justification. |
