Description: | Babylon Bar and Restaurant sits on a gentle slope, surrounded by residences on two sides and elevated by retaining walls, making spatial planning, visibility and structural innovation crucial to the design. The site is organised into four zones: services, indoor, semi-open and brewery. The service, occupying the rear side, functions as an acoustic buffer, protecting the neighbours from noise, while the brewery is elevated on coffered ceiling to offer street visibility. Existing trees are integrated into the semi-open and courtyard area, reflecting a thoughtful understanding of the site’s urban context. Composite circular columns and exposed RCC structural system creates an illusion of weightlessness that is accentuated by glass panels. Perimeter beams integrated with gutters double as planters for vibrant creepers. The introduction of plants through structural innovation, not only soften the rustic material palette but also washes the design in a natural overgrown look. By eliminating the walls between the brewery and indoor bar, the design melds the space into a seemingly single entity—with slabs seemingly floating between them, creating a perfect illusion. Babylon’s ability to integrate plants with structural elements, highlight a unique approach to design and its thoughtful zoning demonstrates a respect for the site’s urban setting. |
