Description: | "Everyday India" is a research-based illustrated documentation of multiplicity and multiculturalism in the Indian graphic art/design landscape. Originally an exhibition, it has taken the form of a book that records this collection of observations, both panoptic and meticulous, looking at design beyond the confines of ‘file dimensions.’ The spillage of ‘graphic design’ onto the streets—where the formal and informal meet—also explores where design ends, art begins, and their overlaps. The book's design draws heavily from India's rich graphic heritage, using materials, iconography, customization, and a vibrant color palette. The cover, made from 'kappa board'—a material usually hidden inside hardbound books—takes center stage, reflecting the urban decay around us. The section-bound pages allow the book to lay flat, making it easy to view. Two sticker sheets—one screen-printed, the other offset-printed—invite readers to personalize the cover, echoing India's tradition of customizing everything from bikes to phone cases. Contributions from Khorshed Deboo, Anusha Narayanan, Kay Khoo, and Kaiwan Mehta offer varied perspectives on Indian graphic design. These textual elements are thoughtfully presented in different sizes and colors, inspired by single-color handouts on vibrant papers, maintaining their unique character. |
